Your brakes are one of the few systems on your vehicle where a small warning sign today can mean a much bigger repair, or a real safety risk, tomorrow. Here's what to watch for.
1. Squealing or squeaking
A high-pitched squeal when you brake is often your pads' built-in wear indicator doing its job. It's a signal to get them checked soon, not necessarily an emergency, but don't ignore it for months.
2. Grinding
A grinding or growling noise usually means the pads are worn past their wear indicator and metal is contacting metal. This can damage your rotors and cost significantly more to fix the longer it continues.
3. A soft or spongy pedal
If the brake pedal sinks further than usual before engaging, it can point to air in the brake lines or a fluid leak. This is worth having looked at promptly.
4. Pulling to one side
If your vehicle pulls left or right under braking, it can mean uneven pad wear or a sticking caliper, both of which affect how evenly your vehicle stops.
5. Vibration through the pedal or steering wheel
A pulsing sensation when braking is a common sign of warped rotors, often from heat buildup on long descents or aggressive stop-and-go driving.
When to book
None of these mean you need to panic, but all of them are worth a proper inspection. Our technicians check pad thickness, rotor condition, and fluid as part of every brake service, so you know exactly where things stand before we recommend any work.
